Freire - Dialogue, Praxis and Conscientization

Paulo Freire’s ideas of dialogue, praxis, and conscientization help OSHC educators move beyond “managing children” to building a culture where children’s voices matter, power is shared appropriately, and everyday decisions are grounded in fairness, dignity, and critical reflection. In this OSHC-ready module, you’ll learn the core concepts in plain language, hear a creative “voice of Freire” narrative (educational purpose only), listen to educators plan how to apply the lens, hear an Educational Leader interview on mentoring dialogic practice in a real service, work through a realistic case study, and complete a critical reflection using the Circle of Change (revised) so learning becomes visible in daily interactions and team culture.

About the course

OSHC is full of moments where power and voice show up: rules, routines, fairness disputes, conflict, inclusion, “who gets a say,” and what happens when children disagree. Freire’s lens helps educators notice when practice becomes done to children (compliance-focused) and how to shift toward done with children—without losing boundaries, safety, or adult responsibility.

Freire’s approach isn’t about letting everything go. It’s about:
  • using dialogue instead of domination
  • building children’s agency and sense of belonging
  • practising praxis (reflection + action) as a team routine
  • supporting children to recognise fairness, power, and responsibility in everyday life
  • creating a service culture where learning and behaviour guidance are grounded in respect

Understand Freire in OSHC

A clear introduction to dialogue, praxis, and conscientization—what they mean and how they apply to everyday OSHC moments.

See it in practice + leadership

Bring the lens to life through a “voice of the theorist” narrative, educator implementation dialogue, a real case study, and an Educational Leader interview on mentoring dialogic, respectful practice.

Reflect → improve

Use the Circle of Change (revised): Deconstruct → Confront → Theorise → Think Otherwise, then consolidate in “What have I learnt?” with one next step to trial.

How this module works

This module follows a consistent, educator-friendly structure:
  • Introduction to Paulo Freire + What are dialogue, praxis, and conscientization?
Plain-language overview with OSHC examples: rules and routines, children’s voice, fairness disputes, conflict repair, inclusion, and power dynamics.
  • “Let’s hear from Paulo Freire”
A short creative narrative where “Freire” speaks to respectful dialogue and learning through reflection + action (educational purpose only).
  • Educator dialogue: implementing Freire’s lens
A realistic conversation between educators after completing the module—brainstorming how to:
shift from “telling” to dialogic conversation
hold boundaries while increasing voice and agency
respond to conflict through problem-posing questions
use reflective questions as part of everyday practice
create shared agreements that children understand and own
  • Interview: Educational Leader perspective
    A grounded interview focused on:
how an Educational Leader mentors educators to use dialogue “on the floor”
how to build team confidence for facilitative conversations (not lectures)
how to support children’s participation in decision-making appropriately
how to embed praxis as a team routine (reflect → adjust → try again)
  • OSHC case study: voice, fairness, and power in action
A realistic scenario where children challenge rules or fairness (e.g., “that’s not fair,” exclusion, rule negotiation in a game, group conflict, resistance at pack-up). Learners practise responding using dialogue and problem-posing approaches—without slipping into power struggles.
  • Critical reflection (Circle of Change – revised)
Deconstruct → Confront → Theorise → Think Otherwise to examine default habits (e.g., compliance-first, “because I said so,” controlling routines) and redesign practice that protects dignity and builds responsibility.
  • What have I learnt?
A short consolidation step to name key takeaways and commit to one practical change to trial.

What educators will be able to do after this module

Educators who complete this module will be better able to:
  • Use dialogue strategies that reduce power struggles and build connection
  • Respond to conflict and fairness disputes with facilitative, problem-posing questions
  • Support children’s voice and responsibility within clear adult boundaries
  • Strengthen inclusion by noticing who has power in peer culture and shifting it respectfully
  • Build team habits of praxis—reflecting and adjusting practice intentionally
  • Create a more respectful service culture where children experience dignity and belonging

Who this module is for

  • OSHC educators wanting practical tools for respectful behaviour guidance, voice, and fairness
  • Educational Leaders / service leaders mentoring dialogic practice and reflective team culture
Ready to guide behaviour and culture through dialogue (not domination)?
